When Forrest and I went to Disneyland last November, there was one treat I KNEW I had to get.

The Jack Jack Num Num Cookie.

I had seen friends absolutely rave about it, and I couldn’t believe I hadn’t tried it yet.

We spent a day in California Adventure at the Festival of Holidays, and after eating all of that food, we decided to finish the night with the Jack Jack Num Num.

Not gonna lie – I was stuffed, and I wasn’t sure it was something I REALLY wanted to eat…but I’m so glad I ignored that feeling.

These are seriously my favorite treat at Disneyland. I have often been disappointed by Disneyland food in the past, but this was not one of those disappointments.

It was warm, and soft, and delicious…and I was so sad our tickets weren’t park hopper passes, so I couldn’t go back the next day to get more!

Since I know there are a lot of people missing out on Disneyland trips right now, I thought I would share a copycat version I came up with.

These aren’t an *exact* replica – but they are pretty close. And we all loved them.

The key is *slightly* underbaking them and making sure you eat them WARM. If you have let them cool, pop them in the microwave to soften them up a little bit.

I know that this recipe won’t solve all the Disneyland trip-woes, but I hope it can be something your family can enjoy.

Deep Dish Cookies

Supplies:

I used these 3.5″ baking cups for these cookies. They were a little smaller than the actual cookies, but they worked pretty well. (here are some reusable options)

Mixing bowls

I prefer to use my stand mixer, but it’s really up to you!

Ingredients:

• 1 cup salted butter, softened
• 3/4 cup brown sugar
• 3/4 cup white sugar
• 2 large eggs
• 1.5 tsp vanilla extract
• 2 1/2 cups flour
• 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
• 1 teaspoons salt
• 2 cups milk chocolate chips
• 1/2 cup chocolate chunks

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Cream softened butter, brown sugar, and white sugar together until combined.

Add in the eggs and vanilla and mix well.

In a separate bowl, mix together flour, baking soda, and salt.

Mix the flour bowl into the sugar/butter mixture until a dough forms.

Fold in chocolate chips.

Place the cookie cups out on a baking sheet.

Scoop about 1/4-1/3 cup of the dough into the cup and flatten out evenly.

Bake for about 13 minutes – they will continue to cook for a few minutes once you remove them from the oven, so it’s okay if they look slightly underdone.

Press chocolate chunks into the top of the cookies

Is there anything more nostalgic than thinking about walking around Disneyland or Disney World with one of their AMAZING corn dogs in hand?

I didn’t think so. I’m not someone who usually goes crazy over corn dogs, but there’s just something about the ones at Disneyland that are just a little bit magical (I swear, they must sprinkle a little bit of pixie dust in the batter!).

But why should these be limited to just when you go to the park – especially if it’s not something that may happen anytime soon (or ever?!) It shouldn’t be!

My family recently had a “Disney Dinner Week” where I made copycat versions of different foods from the Disney Parks, so it only made sense for us to try out the corn dogs at home.

I found this recipe that claims it’s the recipe Disney gives you if you ask for it. I adjusted it a little bit and found a few tips that I think will make it a little bit easier to make these at home – but they got two thumbs up from everyone in our house!

They can be a little time intensive, but I promise, it’s worth the effort!

What size hot dogs should I use?

That’s up to you! The ones in the park are pretty long, but if you are like me and don’t have a pot that’s big enough for that, I just go with the standard, bun length hot dogs

How come the batter won’t completely cover the hot dog?

I have found that after I dip the first couple hot dogs, the batter seems to resist sticking as well. Annoying!

When this happens, I try to cover it as much as possible. Then, I may try and put some on with a spoon and kind of swirl it around. Seems to get the job done!

My batter seems really thick

I put a variable amount of milk in this, because when I did it with the original amount (just one cup) it was SO thick. I ended up adding about 1/2 a cup, which worked perfectly. Start with 1 1/4 and add more as needed.

Ingredients

• 1 cup corn meal
• 1 cup all-purpose flour
• 2 tablespoon sugar
• 2 teaspoons bakning powder
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 1 egg
• 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 cups milk
• 2 tablespoons melted shortening
• 6-8 hot dogs (depending on size)
• Wooden Skewers

Directions

• Place a large pot of oil on the stove – there should be enough oil to fully submerge the hot dog. You need to heat it to 375 degrees.
• Combine all ingredients, except hot dogs, together with a stand mixer/hand mixer or in a blender. Start with the smaller amount of milk and add more if it seems too thick.
• Pour into a tall glass.
• Skewer each hot dog
• Once the oil is ready, dip one hot dog at a time into the mixture and swirl until covered.
• Place into the pot of oil, holding it as straight up as you can.
• Cook for about 3-4 minutes, or until the exterior is golden brown.
• Place on a plate with paper towels and serve with a choice of condiments.

Do I Need a Pot to Fry These In?

I do recommend using a large pot. This does require quite a bit of oil, however, I find that they turn out best when you are able to hold them upside down in a pot rather than fry each side partially.

What temperature is best for frying corn dogs?

You will find different recommendations, but I personally have found that 375 degrees farenheit is the ideal temperature for frying – especially corn dogs!

I do suggest using a thermometer to ensure the oil is at the temperature you want it to be. This is really the key to successful frying.

How can I make corn dogs healthier?

Inherently, this isn’t a health food – I mean, it’s completely deep-fried. However, you could try and use a higher quality hot dog. I personally used an organic brand from King Soopers, and they turned out great!
